Roerich, Nicholas (from) to Earl Schrack
ORIGINAL CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY, Object of Power or Talisman
Date unknown. Sent c. 1930
Medium: Ink on rice paper Size in inches: 20" x 13-1/2" Size in centimeters: 51 x 34 cm Provenance: Estate of Joseph Earl Schrack Comments: Chinese calligraphy, an object of power sent by Nicholas Roerich to Joseph Earl Schrack. Calligraphy style: Tsao Shu. Meaning of this symbol: light, shining, radiance, glory, blessing, grace, happiness; shining, glorious; to shine, to radiate light, to light up with glory. The talisman came from the estate of late Joseph Earl Schrack, who in 1930's was the President of the Academy of Creative Arts, Roerich Museum, New York. Accompanied by an original brocade pouch, an original envelope and a very old plastic envelope in which Earl Schrack carried the object with him folded in 32nds. It is known that a famous Russian artist, writer, philosopher and spiritual teacher Nicholas Roerich [Nikolay Konstantinovich Rerikh] (1874-1947) in special occasions was giving to chosen people certain talismans endowed with a spiritual force. (There are some indications of this practice in letters of his wife Elena Ivanovna Roerich). In most cases the recipients were his apprentices of the highest rank. Also, such objects of power sometimes were sent as reminders of some events or meetings that took place in past lives. Such objects were always sent individually and very few of them are known. This item belonged to the archive of Earl Schrack and its delivery chronologically preceded the group of letters sent to him by Nicholas Roerich in 1930's.
