Orlov, Ivan)
TIPOGRAFSKAYA PECHAT' ORLOVA ("Orlov's Typographical Printing"). Album. (Money Printing)
[St. Petersburg, 1890's]

4to (10" x 7-1/4") cloth embossed in gilt to front; all edges gilt; moire endpapers; tissue guards; slipcase.

An elaborately manufactured album containing 67 original prints - samples of money printing using technology invented by an outstanding Russian engineer Ivan Orlov. Nice condition.
Loosely inserted 4-page 4to (10" x 8") booklet in English advertising Orlov's printing method (Gold Medal on 1900 Paris Exhibition).

The copy belonged to an important industrial official Mikhail Tripolitov, contains his stamped address and signed probably by I. Orlov.

Comparing Tripolitov's address in the album with his known addresses in old directories, the album should be dated before 1901. It might be prepared for 1900 Paris exhibition.
Because both Orlov and Tripolitov were engineers and worked for the same Russian money-printing organization E.Z.G.B. (Ekspeditsiya Zagotovleniya Gosudarstvennykh Bumag), the album could be a gift to Tripolitov from Orlov himself.

Roerich, Nicholas (from) to Earl Schrack
ORIGINAL CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY, Object of Power or Talisman
Date unknown. Sent c. 1930

Medium: Ink on rice paper

Size in inches: 20" x 13-1/2"

Size in centimeters: 51 x 34 cm

Provenance: Estate of Joseph Earl Schrack

Comments: Chinese calligraphy, an object of power sent by Nicholas Roerich to Joseph Earl Schrack. Calligraphy style: Tsao Shu. Meaning of this symbol: light, shining, radiance, glory, blessing, grace, happiness; shining, glorious; to shine, to radiate light, to light up with glory.

The talisman came from the estate of late Joseph Earl Schrack, who in 1930's was the President of the Academy of Creative Arts, Roerich Museum, New York. Accompanied by an original brocade pouch, an original envelope and a very old plastic envelope in which Earl Schrack carried the object with him folded in 32nds.

It is known that a famous Russian artist, writer, philosopher and spiritual teacher Nicholas Roerich [Nikolay Konstantinovich Rerikh] (1874-1947) in special occasions was giving to chosen people certain talismans endowed with a spiritual force. (There are some indications of this practice in letters of his wife Elena Ivanovna Roerich). In most cases the recipients were his apprentices of the highest rank. Also, such objects of power sometimes were sent as reminders of some events or meetings that took place in past lives. Such objects were always sent individually and very few of them are known.

This item belonged to the archive of Earl Schrack and its delivery chronologically preceded the group of letters sent to him by Nicholas Roerich in 1930's. (See also items 05001A, 05002A, 05003A, and 05004A)

(Blarenberghe)
[EXERCISES DE LA CAVALERIE]. Album of Engravings.
No Place: Guill Sergent (printer), c. 1775.
A very large volume of engravings about cavalry. The spine bears the following: "Exercises de la cavalerie". The page size is 63.5 x 46.5 cm, and there are 32 plates. Numbers 14 and 15 each have four gatefold panels; no. 25 is a triple-fold; the other 29 are doublespreads. The engravings are after Blarenberghe (no first name or initial, probably Louis-Nicolas van Blarenberghe (1716-1794), or Henri-Desire van Blarenberghe, (1734-1812). There are numerous engravers. A few of the engravers have dated their work 1775. The 32 plates are numbered 1-32 and all deal with cavalry and horsemanship. The first plate shows a riding ground and 6 cartouches illustrating saddling, mounting, and the like. The second plate bears the legend "L'Ecole des Chevaux". Various legends refer to the campaigns of 1740 and 1748, so that might be Swedish-Russian War. The plates do not represent actual battles but, rather, depictions of the types of formations used at various times and in various circumstances. From a private library with stamps.
